A 19-year-old Boca Raton man who was driving a scooter on a residential street in West Boca died Wednesday after being struck by a small SUV, with authorities investigating potential impairment of the driver.

Alexander Daniel Acevedo, 19, of Boca Raton, was struck and killed on Sandalfoot Boulevard, a small residential roadway in a neighborhood off SR-7 (US 441) in unincorporated Boca Raton. The accident occurred at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday when a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, being driven by John A. Adams, 34, of Deerfield Beach, was traveling westbound on Sandalfoot Boulevard, approaching the intersection of North Branch Road.

According to a police report, as the Chevrolet approached the 10520 block, it “drifted in a southwesterly direction, over the center continuous left turn lane, and partially into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of travel” of the scooter being ridden by Acevedo. The report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said during the ensuing collision, the front passenger side of the Chevrolet hit the scooter violently vaulting it into the air and ejecting the driver.

The scooter broke into several pieces, the PBSO report said, and Acevedo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue about 15 minutes after their arrival.

The report said alcohol or drug impairment were being investigated as a potential factor in the crash, and charges were pending the outcome of an investigation.
