Boca Raton, Parks District Agree on $12M Softball Complex Plan at Sugar Sand Park

Boca Raton officials this week unanimously approved a plan to partner with the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District on what is expected to be a $12 million project to create a new softball complex on a portion of Sugar Sand Park.

The city council approved an interlocal agreement with the parks district that will enable to plan to come to fruition. The plan, as laid out in the agreement, calls for the design and construction of a softball field in what is known as “Tract A” within the park to address the displacement of existing softball fields at the City Hall campus, which is the subject of redevelopment plans.

“Tract A,” as noted in the video embedded with this story (load the page here or disable ad blockers to view the video at the top of this page), is located near Camino Real and Military Trail. Under the agreement, the city will design and construct a new softball field complex on available land located within that section of the park. The complex will include athletic fields, dugouts, batting cages, bleachers, shade structures, concessions, restrooms, internal roads and walkways, and new parking — all located within Tract A and outside of designated conservation areas. The city will also install the necessary utility infrastructure to support the facility.

The city and  parks district have jointly operated and maintained Sugar Sand Park since 1993. The latest agreement does not change the way the park operates, and is limited to the addition of the new softball complex, officials said.

Under the agreement, the city will fund all costs related to the design, permitting, and construction of the softball complex, which are currently estimated at $12 million. Future project expenditures would have to be authorized by the council, along with any budget amendments. Upon construction completion, the parks district will assume full ownership, maintenance, and operation of the complex, just as it does with the existing park amenities.
