Authorities said an accident that left a bicyclist critically injured occurred after the person on the bicycle ran a red light.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the accident took place at the intersection of Military Trail and SW 18th Street in unincorporated Boca Raton. The crash occurred Thursday at 5:54 a.m.
According to a statement, PBSO said a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas being driven by Brian Dragutsky, 47, of Boca Raton, was traveling southbound on Military Trail within the inside lane, stopped at the intersection of SW 18th Street on a red traffic signal when the accident occurred. At the same time, a bicycle being operated by Roger Vale, 70, of North Carolina, was traveling westbound on SW 18th Street within the bicycle lane, approaching the intersection of Military Trail.
When the traffic signal turned green for southbound Military Trail, the Volkswagen began to enter the intersection at which time the bicycle “ran the red light entering the intersection.”
The front of the bicycle crashed into the front driver side of the Volkswagen SUV. The bicyclist, who was not wearing safety gear, was transported to Delray Medical Center with critical injuries.
