Boca Raton’s Barrel of Monks Brewing Gets OK to Expand

Barrel of Monks Brewing, a brewery and gathering spot on South Rogers Circle in northern Boca Raton, gained support from the city’s planning board on Thursday to expand its outdoor seating area, indoor tasting area and extend its hours.

Board members unanimously voted in for of recommending the popular brewing company’s plan to expand its operations in the industrial district off Congress Avenue. The company requested approval to expand the indoor tasting area from 867 square feet with a 15-foot bar on the first floor to 925 square feet with a 15-foot bar, and adding 803 square feet on the second floor mezzanine. The brewery also plans to add 1,000 square feet on its outdoor patio, which was teeming with customers Thursday night just prior to the board meeting.

The board also heard testimony on changing the establishment’s hours and serving additional snacks and drinks. Monday through Thursday, Barrel of Monks will keep its current hours of 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., but will reduce its hours on Friday, when it will open at 4 p.m. instead of 2 p.m., and close at midnight. On Saturday, the brewery will open two hours earlier – at 12 noon – and close at midnight, while Sunday will also see an additional four hours of service, likewise opening at 12 noon but closing at 11 p.m.

The resolution adopted by the board also allows the brewery to offer “incidental sale of beverages not manufactured at the Brewery,” namely wine, canned cocktails and soft drinks. Serving and consuming alcohol will also be permitted in the outdoor patio area.

The footprint of the building will not be changing, with Barrel of Monks offering 9,136 square feet of indoor space. An additional 1,000 square feet out outdoor space will be added, expanding and formalizing a makeshift outdoor patio that already exists. The brewery often invites food trucks to offer meals and snacks outside the front door for patrons, which will be accessed quickly from the patio.

Barrel of Monks brews Belgian-style beer using a combination of traditional ingredients and modern brewing techniques. In addition to the brewery site, its beers are served at hundreds of bars throughout South Florida, and sold at liquor stores statewide.
